Memorial Day is this weekend and people will be gathered with friends and families. Lots of BBQ and decorating happening. All to celebrate our soldiers that fought and died for our country.
All the more to do something in honor of this celebration. Last year I created buntings with material I found at Old Time Pottery for the porch. This year, I had an idea to create something that can be used way after the weekend is over.
A Patriotic Succulent Terrarium.
Old Time Pottery has lots of patriotic items to choose from. I tend to go in different directions with ideas. I have been wanting a terrarium for a long time. So I gathered up some picture frames to do the trick. Old Time Pottery has quite a few in different sizes and made from different materials.
I started with
2 10×13
2 8×10
4 5×7
clear silicone
E6000
Chalk and Mineral based Paint
planter
Succulents
ribbon
Unwrap and take backing out of frame, paper and mat leaving just frame and glass
Paint with a chalk based paint if you want a different color. I choose an off white.
Paint two coats for correct coverage
Using E6000 glue in glass. When dried use clear silicone to glue frames together.
I started with 10×13 and 8×10 frames gluing them together with the equal side. You should have an “L” shape. Repeat process then glue together creating a cube.
Gather 5×7’s and glue sides of 5″ together this will give you 10″ that will fit on you 10″ side.
We will use these for the roof peak creating two sides that meat in the middle
I reinforced the frames with silicone. It gives the frames a window look.
Let dry 24hours
Your roof will be formed. I glued a dowel to the center of roof to create a flagpole.
I repainted my second coat when glue was completely dried.
Then I found the most beautiful succulents in the Old Time Pottery nursery.
Love the variation of colors. There are so many flowers and plants to choose from. You can do anything. I choose these because I love succulents. The also resemble firework star bursts.
I had an old planter that I filled with dirt and succulents. I used blue ribbon to make it festive and added red curly picks to the center.
This will be the centerpiece to the terrarium.
Since the bottom of terrarium is open it is easy to place right over the planter.
I glued a piece of ribbon to make a flag bunting on the dowel. I also glued a starfish to the peak of the rooftop.
It gives the perfect patriotic feel to the tabletop.
The best part is that you can use this all summer long and it can go outside or in.
It looks good from any angle.
I love this and will use it all the time. How will you show your patriotism?
Have a wonderful weekend!
God Bless America!
