Do you know someone graduating high school this year?
Here’s a fun graduation gift idea that I like to call “Dorm in a Bag.”
I just had two of my own that I had to get packed and moved, so you’ll find my best products and tips here. You want to make sure your kids have what they need, but it’s easy to go overboard. So this is what I think would make a good gift for anyone on your list.
All products were found at Old Time Pottery. The price is right for a student budget.
For students that can bring appliances to their down or will be moving into an apartment, a toaster over is a great addition to the ubiquitous microwave. So many meals can be cooked in one. Pizza can be warmed up and still be crunchy, which will probably be a big part of their diet even if you bought them a meal plan. Also, grilled cheese is great in the toaster.
That is the first gift that goes inside bag.

I used a laundry bag with handles to store all the gifts. Laundry detergent, towel, dustpan and brush. Laundry….there will be lots. We buy this to encourage them to wash and keep their room clean. Some do just that. Others, well, the bag usually comes back home stuffed with dirty laundry they expect you to do. My advice? Resist the urge to do it for them or else you’ll continue to get garbage sacks filled with more dirty clothes! 7,8,9, loads sometimes! EEK!
The dustpan and brush is a good idea. It helps keep messes at bay.
Do we really think they will wash dishes? Who are we kidding? Let’s get realistic and put some paper products in the bag. They can now toss it in the garbage and won’t feel guilty!
A dry erase board for the week is a great idea to keep up with assignments, meetings and the occasional party. (It will be used mainly for the latter one. Ha!)
Last, but not least is a good multi outlet and surge protector. For some reason there are never enough plugs for all the technology that they have. There are cords everywhere.
My favorite thing in the bag is the bank. Put some quarters for the laundry in it and maybe a $20 for pizza. Either way, they will use it. Tell them to save it for an emergency.
This gift will be used so much and whoever the recipient is, I am sure they will love it!
You can also tie a graduation balloon on it to be more festive.
Create memories and warn them it will go faster than they think!
